Flip Flop House: Scaffold-less and Proud!

Dun dun dun dunnnnnn!!!!!  Seriously – no words!  : )  Okay….yeah there are.  Sweet!  White!  Beautiful!  Clean!  Exactly what we had imagined!

The scaffolding has come down, and we are left with the a very-close-to-being-finished Flip Flop House!

Here is the grand entrance.  If you remember from wayyyy back in the day, we showed you that there will be a reflecting pond that partly surrounds the house (click on the links for some cutting edge graphics):

As you know, we are most thrilled about the staircase.  It was a labor of love, let me tell you (and still is, as the glass guys can attest to).  They are doing such a wonderful job making sure that the glass surrounding the staircase is perfect….

I know it has been mentioned many times before, but like a parent bragging on their child, we must say it again -the light quality that fills this space is truly beautiful….

In the master bedroom, please notice 5 things:

1.  Um yeah, that is a direct view of Venice beach.  Crazies, tans, waves, and rollerblades.  Awesomeness.

2.  Aw yeah – huge sliding glass doors that will allow in the most lovely of summatime breezes.

3.  Uh huh – that column is wrapped in stainless steel, and we double dog dare you to find the welded seam.

4.  Terrazzo is our middle name.  And maybe first.

5.  Oh – yeah…thats a folding down TV from the ceiling.  No Angelino’s home would be complete without it!

When it folds up, it is completely flush.  All you see is a teeny tiny line around the edges.  Nice.

Since we know details are the most important of all design aspects…here are a couple of the “finer” items:

The shelving has hidden brackets – it will look as if it is floating off of the walls.

The A/C unit is recessed into the wall, and will have a minimal white grill in front of it.  Honestly though, even in the hottest parts of the summer, the breeze keeps it nice and cool.  There is wonderful passive cooling here!  Take that global warming!

Another super exciting event that is happening is that we received the kitchen cabinetry from Italy, and we hope to be showing you the installation process in the next post!

Flip Flop House: White, White Everywhere!

I think that I make a comment on every post about how exciting the particular process is….but seriously, this is sooooo exciting!!  The Flip Flop House looks like a house!  A big, white, beautiful home on the beach!

We can’t wait to show you the totally finished terrazzo stair case, and those beautifully wrapped stainless steel columns beyond!

Check out last weeks post for some good info on the staircase:

In this hallway, to the left we have the spinning walls that will hold the owner’s artwork.  To the right are the sliding doors that open onto the upstairs atrium that provides beautiful light and air to the office and master bathroom:

The gorgeous flush interior doors:

This is the client’s office.  This is a great room because it has the wonderful light coming in from the atrium, a view of the rotating walls (which, when they are open, you will be able to see the ocean from this room), and some really really nice wooden shelving.

This is the kitchen area (while standing in the dining room).  All the kitchen cabinetry will go on the right wall underneath the clerestory windows.  A kitchen island made out of Caesarstone will be placed in the middle of the area:

Here, they are bringing the bathroom ceramic tile slabs up to the master shower (verrrrry carefully…)

We chose a ceramic tile product called Kalesinterflex.  It is really beautiful in these large pieces.  It is incredibly smooth and looks seamless!  (Can you tell that’s our style? :)

More finishes to come!  Have a fantastic Monday!

Flip Flop House: Finishes Have Begun!

Well well well….we are back, and a lot has happened to the Flip Flop House since we have last reported on it.

The house is totally coming together, and we are nearing the finish line (no pun intended :) .   We have gotten to the “finishes” phase – which is oh so awesome, because it is looking less like a construction site, and more like a home!  It truly is looking fantastic – we couldn’t be happier.

There are several layers to a finished exterior stucco (check out our detailed stucco description on one of the Encino Renovation posts).  Here is the brown coat on the south side of the house:

And the white finish on the north side:

The lower portion of the staircase glass railing has been installed.  It is so great to see that is turned out perfectly because during the design process, we seriously had to channel our inner geometry-student:

Those little metal guys that hold the glass are called “stand-offs”.

We had them custom designed for this staircase by Accurate Manufactured Products Group – they are really beautiful and clean pieces:

We are loving the way the natural light from the skylight filters down through the stairwell!

Here is one of the bathrooms with Caesarstone around the tub:

The master bathroom:

Someone had to try out this beautiful tub, so Dan took his shoes off and hopped in.  He said it was “sooooooo comfortable!”

The office looks out onto an interior garden patio that is open to the sky above.  This room also receives a lot of beautiful natural light!

The interior recessed lights are trimless, and gorgeous!  They did an incredible job installing them!

And per usual, we end the post with our favorite spot in the house….the main skylight above the stairwell:

We are loving the way the light is laying on these pristine white walls!!

Awesome: Chair.

While doing our daily browsing on CONTEMPORIST, we came across this chair by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance for Bernhardt design:

Needless to say, we were immediately won over (like, times a thousand)  Then, we saw a video showing the construction process of this fine piece of seating apparatus – and it took our breath away even more!!  Talk about design lust….

Flip Flop House: Terrazzo, if you please!

Another moment we’ve been eagerly anticipating – the installation of the Terrazzo floors!

It takes about 3 weeks to complete the process (not including polishing, which will be done last in the construction process).  They began installing it in the last week of April – so, by the end of May, we should have our beautiful white floors!

Terrazzo is a polymer based material that is highly durable, easily repairable, easy to clean, and under the right conditions – looks very elegant!  When all is said and done, we will have a flat, seamless floor with pieces of glass and stone that add depth, and just the right amount of shimmer.  They’ll look oh so modern, yet classic!

Over the radiant floor heating, they pour a thin layer of concrete, and then lay a fabric material that will allow the terrazzo to adhere.

Then comes the terrazzo.  Before it is ground down, the material looks a little like cottage cheese (yummm).  Next, they begin grinding the “thin-set” terrazzo:

To get the correct thickness, they have metal pieces along the edges that they will grind down to.  Can’t wait to see it in a couple more weeks!

A few more fun things in the Flip Flop House….

Here is the fireplace for the ground floor living area:

On the deck areas, there will be a waterproofing membrane layer, then “lath” (a material that helps things to adhere).  Next, a thin layer of concrete.  On top of the concrete, there will be pedestals (which we’ll tell you more about when they arrive on site ).  Finally, we’ll put on the Sadlerstone Tiles!

Some more waterproofing:

Here are some lights that were just installed:

And we’ll finish this post with a sweet view of the Flip Flop Houses’ own Tower of Terror.  Noooo – just kidding!  We will put in a very safe, quiet, and non-terrifying elevator into this shaft.   Promise!
